REF to be delayed by a year

In a recent speech David Willetts has confirmed that the REF will be delayed by one-year in order to “figure out whether there is a method of assessing impact which is sound and which is acceptable to the academic community”. While it’s difficult to know how much of this decision can be said to ensue from protest against the ‘impact agenda’, it undoubtedly signal that the next year will prove crucial in determining the future state of research within British higher education.
